Some British Expressions


Some British Expressions that you may not learn in school!

1.Nip in the bud
Means : Fix a small problem before it becomes a big problem
Example: i got a problem i’m gonna nip it in the bud

2. To champ at the bit
Means: To very impatient to start doing something
Example:
                 A: Is she excited to start the Uni ?
                 B: Yes, She’s champing at the bit

3. One fell swoop
Means: Do everything at once
Example: He fired everyone in one fell swoop

4. A moot point
Means: An irrelevant question/ A pointless debate
Example: you debate with your gf
                   GF: i want to go to the beach for today
                   You: no, i prefer to go to the mountain
                    GF: no, i prefer the beach
                   You: no, mountain is better
and then the rain is coming,
                   GF: Babe, it’s raining out side, our argunment was A MOOT POINT
                    You: yeah, you’re right, let’s chill and watching netflix

5. Be on tenter hooks
Means: Be in a state of suspenese or painful anxienty
Example: What happens next in the game of throne ! i want to know, i’m on tenter hooks

6. Not fussed
Means: i feel okay with everything, or up to you (in choosing something)
Example:  A:Where shall we go for dinner ? Italian restaurant or Indian one ?
                   B: both sound good, i’m not bothered

7. Fair enough
Means: That’s acceptable/ That’s reasonable
Example:  A: i can’t come to your party, i got to work tomorrow.
                   B: That’s fair enough
      
8. I suppose so
Means:  I think yeah you’re right / I don’t see a reason why not
Example: A: i think it’s a zombie
                  B: yeah, i suppose so.

9. May as well/ Might as well
Means: Nothing better to do when (when you’re feeling bored)
Example: you go to the party and the party was rubbish
                 A: I might as well have stayed at home.
                 B: yeah, i suppose so.
                 A: shall we go home now ?
                 B: yeah, might as well go home

10. Fancy
Means: Want
Note: After word fancy verb have to be verb1+ing
Example: what do you fancy doing tonight ?

11. Whinging
Means: Stop complaining
Example: A: i hate this new batman, he’s black and he’s bearded bla bla bla (he keeps muttering)
                  B: Stop whinging bro, it’s just a movie eh

12. A doodle
Means: Easy
Example:  A: you could do beatboxing ?
                   B: yeah, it’s a doodle.

13. A piece of piss
Means: easy
Example: Making a graffito is a piece of piss for me.

14. Bugger all (Very offensive world)
Means: Nothing 
Example:

15. Chuffed
Means: Very Happy
Example: He was chuffed because I gave him a new bike.

16. Dodgy
Means: Dishonest/ not to be trusted
Example: Don’t tell a secret to Marla, she’s dodgy.

17. Fluke
Means: Something happens due to luck.
Example: It was a fluke, he made a goal in the last minute and brought the victory for his club.
